A large body of research on brain development and how young children learn clearly identifies the importance of learning in the context of relationships. In addition, the social and emotional development of young children and the nature of their relationships and attachments are critical to their development.

Learning readiness refers to the developing capacity of children to self-regulate; develop close, secure personal relationships with adults and peers; demonstrate curiosity in, pay attention to and explore people and objects in the environment; demonstrate a sense of self-confidence as well as effective communicating skills.

Skills training in the Bumble Bee Social Group includes:

1.  Develop and engage in positive relationships and interactions with adults

2. Begin to learn and internalize rules, routines and directions (i.e. following instruction sitting for tale task, paying attention in class)

3. Begin to develop personal relationships with peers (i.e. taking turns, sharing and cooperating with peers)

4. Demonstrate interest, curiosity, and eagerness in learning and discovery

5. Begin to develop and demonstrate control over some of their feelings and regulating self-behaviours (i.e. understanding basic emotions, acquiring problem-solving skills)

Hong Kong Developmental Paediatrics Centre offers The Incredible Years® Child Program Dinosaur School Preschool-Grade 3, an evidence-based proven, child training program for strengthening children’s social skills, emotional self-regulation such as understanding and communicating feelings, using effective problem solving strategies, managing anger, practicing friendship and conversational skills, and behaving appropriately in the classroom.

The programme aims to treat children with conduct problems, ADHD, and internalizing problems in small interactive classes to coach children’s social skills, emotional regulation and problem solving critical for school success in 18 sessions. Incredible Years® has been extensively researched and the benefits are consistently shown with families of different cultures. Many papers on the programme has been published and is considered the “model program” in U.S.

Standardised structure developed over 30 years ago, used in over 20 countries worldwide, with strict training and monitoring of instructors. The program is run by Dr. Maureen Kong, an Incredible Years Group Leader and Registered Clinical Psychologist and a Psychology major teacher.

Skills training in the Incredible Years® Child Program:

Improvement in their child’s attention, behaviours, emotion regulation and social competence. Teachers reported a reduction of externalising behaviours and improvements in social competence during peer interactions.

The Social Engineering Group is a structured, play based curriculum that aims to support children to begin developing social skills through play and practical hands-on activities. Drawing on concepts and strategies from a range of evidence-based therapy tools including the Social Thinking© Curriculum and the Zones Regulation©. The group structure follows a combination of group-based activity discussions, reflections and plays to support and consolidate learning. Student’s participation in this group aims to increase social outcomes at home, school and among the community.

Skills training in the Social Engineering Group includes:

Advance social and emotional coping skills, such as social inference perspective taking skills, managing unpleasant events, discussion and conversational skills will also be targeted and worked on in the group.

LEGO® The Brick Wizard Club

LEGO® Therapy is an evidence-based training aimed to support children with social-behavioural needs. Dr. Cecilia Lam is a licensed LEGO® therapy practitioner. She is specialized in helping children with social communication challenges to develop social competence through LEGO® play.

Executive Function- K Group

Executive function is a set of higher-level cognitive ability, involving with the regulation and control of various cognitive processes such as working memory, concentration, decision making and abstract thinking.

Psychological Therapy

Psychological therapy aims to address mental and emotional issues. With Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Behaviour Modification Program, psychologists help children to cope with their problems by altering their mindset and behaviour. 

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is crucial in the training of children with speech delay, hearing impairment, communication disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders and specific language disorders. It promotes or oromotor coordination as well as the intention and quality of communication. 

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps children to reach their full potential at home, in social settings and in school, through improving their eye-hand coordination, self care skills and sensory integration.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is vital in the rehabilitation of children with neurological conditions and brain injury. It promotes motor skills, physical coordination, as well as motor planning.

Facts on Common Developmental Conditions

Facts on Common Developmental Conditions

  • Children with ADHD/ADD often present with hyperactivity, inattentiveness and weak impulse control. The symptoms will improve with medication and behavioural modification training.

  • Children with ASD often have weakly integrated eye contact, low communication intention, language impairment, as well as rigid cognition. They may demonstrate repetitive sensory-craving behaviour. The symptoms will improve with Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), speech therapy and sensory integration training.

  • Since symptoms of neurodevelopmental conditions often overlap and co-morbid, your child will need a developmental assessment as early as possible in order to plan the tailor-made intervention.

Amid the habilitation and rehabilitation journey, we work in close collaboration with the government departments, government-funded training institutions and the private service providers. Whereas timely intervention at our centre is highly recommended, we cherish the opportunity to refer our clients to our collaborators for long-term training.

Our referral network includes:


  • Social Welfare Department be waitlisted for SWD CRS-Rehab Preschool training programs, including EETC, ICCC, SCCC, OPRS

  • Referral to Child Assessment Service and Clinical Genetic Service under the Department of Health , Paediatric Departments and Child Psychiatric Units under the Hospital Authority

  • Referral to Hong Kong Education Department for students with special educational needs, Hong Kong Examination Authority to apply for examination accommodation in open examinations
